The Beauty in Friendship

What is a world without friendship? It's a world of sadness, disbelief, and loneliness. As social beings we clamor for friends. Not the type of friends who bring us down or create drama, but the friends we can laugh with (laugh so hard we are crying), the friends who can enjoy sitting together in silence, and the friends who will never divulge our deepest secrets. As a teenager, I was quite naive. Friends were everywhere. High school and college was one big party. Those were the good old days when life was much simpler and the responsibilities of adulthood were unknown. Now my definition of friendship has changed quite drastically.

Many of us reach a point in our lives when we really truly deeply need a close friend. The type of friend that can be trusted with our secrets, but who also won't judge us for those failings. If only it was easy to find that person. A good everlasting friendship will bring out the very best in ourselves.

This friendship can be found in a close friend, a sibling, a parent, a spouse, a neighbor, but whoever it is, everlasting friendship will never be fake, exhausting, or one-sided. True friendship involves a give and take from both people. This is the beauty of friendship - it is a perfect scenario for peace and personal growth. You may have many friends or only a few close friends, but when the times get tough your real friends will surface. During those moments of self-destruction or daily tribulations, only the people who truly desire you the best will remain.

We live in a world full of selfishness, materialism, with a lack of generosity and charity. A good friend will never be found among those vices. If we want to find that beautiful friend, we must work to become beautiful people first. I'm not saying we have to become Mr. Wonderful in a week, but our goal should always be towards self-improvement.

Adulthood brings unexpected paths, winding roads that don't make any sense and cause us to question the reasoning. Knowing that there is a reason for everything in life and having a best friend to hold your hand during it all is one of the most comforting things in this world of uncertainty.

It is almost impossible to find a good friend, but I have been blessed with one who has my best interests at heart and I want nothing short of the best for her. It doesn't matter what or who may separate us, because no matter where life takes us, we will always have this everlasting bond.

Adventures Beyond the Horizon

We all have those moments when childhood memories seem so long ago, and we desire to return to those care-free days. Now being a parent myself, I enjoy just sitting and watching my children play outside. They have no care in the world, but with so many adventures on the horizon. Sometimes, as adults, we forget to have our own adventures. Take a few moments each to to enjoy the smell of freshly cut grass, enjoy the warm sunshine radiating through the trees, or just sit back and sip a frothy cup of morning coffee instead of rushing out the door with it. These might not be the same "adventures" we had a children or even the ones we may dream about as adults (my big adventures include backpacking through Europe or swimming on a Coral Reef), but our daily small "adventures" will help us rejuvenate and begin to enjoy the simple and edifying moments of life. These moments can't ever be taken away from us, even through the daily grind and the chaos of life!

The Sugar and Spice Moments of Life

We all have a little bit of sweetness and a little bit of sauciness. It comes out at different times and in different circumstances of our lives. Sometimes we need to pay more attention to our emotions and our quick responses. Our world has become obsessed with "finding ourselves", "climbing the ladder" or "never letting anyone walk all over us". While, yes, all these things have their proper place and time, these shouldn't be our motto for life. There will be times we must stick up for ourselves, our beliefs/morals and work to gain that position we have been striving for, but this doesn't mean we should coast through life with a negative opinion of everyone and be constantly on the fence ready to attack anyone that differs from our position.

The simplicity and beauty of a flower should be how we approach the craziness of life.

As human beings who wish to be loved and to love in return, we need to focus on the simple things in life, the small successes that help us reach our larger goals. We don't need to walk over everyone to climb the ladder of success, oftentimes that ladder will be reached quicker with less chaos when we use our innate relationship with others to work with them instead of working against them.

So, what's the lesson? Life has its sugar and spice moments, those moments when we are extremely gentle and kind and those moments when we must stand up for ourselves or others (those horrible, unpleasant situations), but for the most part we should fill the majority of circumstances with the "sugar" moments. We will get further in life and eventually, when we get older, there will be much less regret if we learn to love and work with others, instead of always pushing our own agenda.

The best moments in life can be found in a cupcake.
